DOWNTOWN. A quiet, measured dining experience awaits at this popular hotel establishment. Expansive windows invite views of the Hillsborough River into the space, and muted surroundings allow fresh flowers, modern artwork, and terrific cuisine to shine through. The menu updates classic fare, featuring such dishes as salmon carpaccio, lobster strudel with shiitake mushrooms, roasted Long Island duck, and chicken Wellington with mustard demi-glace. Steaks and a full bar are also available, along with an outdoor terrace.

PALMA CEIA. Well-received by locals, this popular coffeehouse is a good place to pick up a cup of java or an iced coffee drink. Light fare is on order for lunch and breakfast and includes pastries, soups, sandwiches and desserts. Stop in for a quick one, or hang out for a while and enjoy the laid-back ambience and the regulars.

SOHO. Perhaps Tampa's best-known restaurant, this venerable steak house is legendary for its impeccable service, top-quality food, and incredible attention to detail. Guests rave about the aged, charcoal-grilled steaks, which are ordered according to weight and thickness. Each comes with a salad, onion soup, baked potato, garlic toast, onion rings, and organic vegetables, so make sure your appetite is substantial. Chicken, seafood and even a vegetarian option are available. The wine list offers 7000 vintages, and there are more than 20 caviars available. Numerous desserts and after-dinner drinks, as well as dancing, are offered in the Henry Waugh room once you have finished dinner. With that much territory, you'd think there would be room for fault. Perhaps ­ but you'd be hard-pressed to find it. Jacket and tie and reservations are required.

YBOR CITY. Though many of Ybor's staunchest critics are quick to observe its heyday has come and gone (again), innovative places like the Big City Tavern make such proclamations seem quite silly. A haven for the city's mavens of style, this stylish spot warrants raves for its chic bar scene and outstanding selection of California wines. Even more praise-worthy is the clever New American fare, which ranges from such familiar classics as NY strip and grilled tuna to global-influenced dishes like pad Thai and duck with mango-basil risotto.

CARROLLWOOD. Its interior a juxtaposition of lights and darks, accented with sleek metallic tones, Bonefish combats the backwoods stigma of seafood restaurants with its hip environs. Its strong popularity also gives credence to a tasty menu. Fish (you choose from several varieties) is cooked over a wood-fired grill; the smoky flavor is accented with mango-, garlic-, teriyaki and butter-tinged sauces. Mussels, rock shrimp, calamari and lobster also make appearances, and pastas, chicken, steaks, and pork round out the options. Waits can be common, so plan accordingly.
